"Stahl Arms" Selected by Into The Pixel!

Yesterday, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) revealed the selection for the 2011 Into The Pixel collection. We’re proud to announce that Guerrilla Artist Jesse van Dijk’s Killzone 3 piece, “Stahl Arms”, is one of the selected artworks. It will be on display at the Into The Pixel Exhibition at the E3 Expo in June.

Into The Pixel is a juried art exhibition that brings together experts from the traditional fine art world and the interactive entertainment industry to display and discuss the art of video games. Since 2004, it selects and showcases outstanding examples of video game art from around the world. The exhibition offers an opportunity for published video game artists to be reviewed and recognized by the public and by their peers.

The selected work, “Stahl Arms”, shows off the main base of operations for Killzone 3’s antagonist, Jorhan Stahl. Its remote location allows for secret testing of powerful new weapon technologies. While coming up with the right look for the facility, Jesse tried to satisfy the requirements of the game designers as well as the art director. “Early concepts for this work focused strongly on the testing platform sticking out to the right,” Jesse recalls. “When the designers decided to shift the action to the factory halls, I began fleshing out the rest of the Stahl facility more.”

“Our art director, Jan-Bart van Beek, really wanted Stahl Arms to convey a sense of scale,” Jesse continues. “It grew from a single mountaintop base to a sprawling complex that occupied most of the mountain wall. The architecture is predominantly industrial, with dark, segmented sections that contain the production facilities, and lighter, yellow-banded sections that house the R & D departments. To underline the commercial nature of Stahl Arms as an organization, part of the structure serves as commercial office space as well.”

For his part, Jesse is very happy that Stahl Arms was selected for the Into The Pixel 2011 Exhibition. “It’s always highly fulfilling to have your work recognized by peers,” he says. “And to have Stahl Arms featured in the exhibition alongside so many amazing artworks is a great honor.” To check out the other selected art works – including several from exclusive PlayStation titles – please click here.
